About
“Caribbean amber was discovered only recently on the island of Dominica“.
“Baltic green amber gets it’s color from the lush forests of the Ukraine that change the Ice Age old amber to this green gem. The green occurs when organic material from plants is trapped within the natural amber, giving the green color.”
These statements are simply wrong and misleading, even scientifically ridiculous. There is no Caribbean Amber – green or any other color – on Dominica (apart from the souvenir shops that import it). The only green amber mined in the Caribbean is the amber that is found in the Dominican Republic. The names may sound similar, but that is all that’s true about this statement.
The Baltic green amber receives its color and brilliance from heat treatment in an autoclave, de-naturalizing the original material. The color is not made y nature, but by men. Sometimes they even add some black paint to the back of the stone to make it look green.
Now, what if misinterpretations are made on purpose for financial benefit? Commercial misrepresentations are not only misleading, annoying and time and money consuming, but when they are done on purpose, they are harmful gross lies and lack of respect of the customers intelligence. According to Wikipedia they may constitute “false statements or promises made by a seller of goods regarding the quality or nature of the product that the seller has” .
Exactly this is happening with Caribbean Amber. What is being commonly offered is not “Amber” (old, fossilized tree resin), but physically changed young resin material. But the broad public is made believe that it is “up to 50 million years old amber”.
For many sales people it might be lack of research and information that leads them to state these wrong facts, but in some cases it is “Fraudulent misrepresentation” made ”with intent to deceive and with the knowledge that it is false.” Therefore, “an action for fraudulent misrepresentation allows for a remedy of damages and rescission.”
